Indians may now need to provide their fingerprints and a facial scan when applying for an Australian visa. The change started on 26 October 2026 and covers new applications only.

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs is rolling this out in nearly 60 countries to confirm identities and reduce fraud, and India is now on the list. It can apply to student, visitor, and work visas.

Who Is Affected?
  • Affected : Anyone who lodges a new application on or after 26 October 2026.
  • Not affected : Applications lodged before that date, and visas already granted.
  • Not everyone will be asked for biometrics. You do not need to book anything on your own when you apply. First submit your application online through ImmiAccount. The department then checks your case and, if it needs your biometrics, sends you a Biometric Requirement Letter. Act only after you receive this letter.

Two Ways to Give Your Biometrics

Your letter tells you which option applies to you.

    Option 1 : Visit a Collection Centre

Some applicants must go in person to an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC). VFS Global runs these centres in major Indian cities, and you need to book an appointment.

    What to carry :

  • Your original, valid passport (the same one used in your application)
  • Your Biometric Requirement Letter
  • Good to know :

  • VFS Global charges a service fee for this.
  • If the applicant is a minor, a parent or legal guardian must come along.
  • If you wear a religious head covering or want more privacy, you can ask for a private booth with staff of the same gender.
  • If you have heavy henna (mehndi) on your fingers, check with the centre first. Dark patterns on the fingertips can stop the scanner from reading your prints properly.
  • Option 2 : Use the Australian Immi App

Some applicants can do this from home on a smartphone, with no biometric fee.

You can use this option if :

  • The Visa Lodgement Number (VLN) on your letter starts with AUI
  • Your passport is valid
  • You have already given biometrics at an official centre before
  • How it works :

    1. Use a phone with NFC to scan the chip in your passport.
    2. Scan the page of your passport that has your personal details.
    3. Take a live photo of your face against a plain, light-colored background.

    What This Means for Students

For Indian students planning to study in Australia, this adds one more step, and it needs a quick response once you get the letter. The main requirements stayed as they were: English test scores, proof of funds, the genuine student check, and health and character checks.

The Australian High Commission has said biometrics should not slow down visa processing, as long as applicants complete the step soon after getting their letter.

    What You Should Do
  • After you apply, check your ImmiAccount and your email often.
  • Read the Biometric Requirement Letter carefully when it arrives. It decides whether you go to a centre or use the app.
  • Give your fingerprints and photo quickly. Waiting can hold up your case.
  • Keep your passport safe and valid until the process is complete.
  • Always confirm the latest details on the official Department of Home Affairs website or with the Australian High Commission before you apply.
