Good news for Indian travellers. Starting from June 3, 2026, Indian passport holders can now transit through German airports without needing a Schengen Airport Transit Visa (Type A), as long as they meet the required conditions.

Germany had announced this decision earlier in January 2026 during the visit of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to India. The new rule is now officially in effect and is expected to make international travel easier for thousands of Indian passengers.

What Has Changed?

Under the new arrangement, Indian citizens travelling through German airports such as Frankfurt or Munich no longer need an airport transit visa when they are connecting to a non-Schengen country.

This means travellers can change flights at German airports without applying for a separate transit visa, provided they remain within the airport’s international transit area.

The German Embassy in New Delhi confirmed that the exemption became effective on June 3, 2026, after being published in Germany’s official Federal Law Gazette on June 2, 2026.

According to the embassy, the move reflects Germany’s efforts to strengthen its relationship with India, improve the movement of people between the two countries, and support stronger economic cooperation.

India Welcomes the Decision

India has welcomed the implementation of the new transit policy.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the visa-free transit facility for Indian nationals travelling through Germany by air has officially started from June 3, 2026.

He also mentioned that the decision followed discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the Chancellor’s visit to India earlier this year.

The Indian government believes the new arrangement will encourage greater people-to-people connections and make travel between India and Europe more convenient.

What Does This Mean for Indian Travellers?

The biggest benefit is that Indian passengers no longer need to spend time and money applying for an airport transit visa when simply changing flights in Germany.

To use this facility, travellers must :

  • Hold a valid Indian passport.
  • Remain within the airport’s international transit zone throughout your layover.
  • Travel onward to a non-Schengen destination.
  • Complete their transit within 24 hours.
  • Not leave the airport during the layover.
  • For passengers travelling to countries outside the Schengen region, the process becomes much simpler and more convenient.

    Important Conditions to Remember

Although the transit visa requirement has been removed, this does not allow travellers to enter Germany or any other Schengen country without the proper visa.

Anyone who plans to leave the airport, collect luggage outside the transit area, or enter Germany during their stopover must still obtain the appropriate visa before travelling.

Travellers should also be aware that the exemption only applies in specific situations.

If a journey includes transit through more than one Schengen country, the visa-free transit privilege may not apply. In such cases, travellers could still need a valid Schengen visa because entering the transit area of another Schengen country is considered entry into the Schengen Zone.

Easier Travel and More Flight Options

The new rule is expected to make international travel smoother for Indian passengers.

Without the need for a separate transit visa, travellers can now choose from a wider range of flight connections through Germany. This can help reduce paperwork, save application costs, and make trip planning easier.

Students travelling abroad, professionals on business trips, and families heading to distant destinations are likely to benefit the most from this change.

With Germany removing the airport transit visa requirement, Indian travellers can enjoy a more straightforward and hassle-free transit experience while connecting through major German airports.
