France has initiated the issuance of Digital Schengen visas, aiming to distribute around 70,000 digital visas for the upcoming 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games in Paris.

From January 1, 2024, France has commenced the issuance of Digital Schengen visas, marking the pioneering effort within the European Union. This step precedes the expected full digitalization of Schengen visa procedures scheduled for 2026.

As the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games approach in Paris (scheduled from July 26 to August 11 and August 28 to September 8), French authorities aim to issue around 70,000 digital visas. It’s important to note that due to the restricted allocation, not everyone will meet the eligibility criteria for application.

Who is eligible to apply for digital visas to travel to France ?

As per French authorities, the French Digital Schengen visa is potentially available to two categories of non-EU citizens requiring entry visas:

1) Individuals affiliated with the Olympic and Paralympic Family seeking accreditation through their relevant committees.

This category encompasses members such as those from the International Olympic Committee and Paralympic Committee, international federations, national committees, Olympic Games organizing committee members, national associations, athletes, judges, coaches, sports Technicians, medical professionals, accredited journalists, senior executives, donors, and patrons.

The application procedure for this category is significantly simplified. They are exempt from the usual procedures of scheduling an appointment, gathering documents, or paying standard Schengen Visa fees. Instead, they are required to appear at the visa center at the designated time, presenting their passport and a valid accreditation certificate issued by the OCOG.

2) Invited official guests of the Olympic or Paralympic Committee (OCOG).

Individuals invited by the OCOG to participate in the games must complete a visa application through the France-Visas website and compile the necessary documents listed on the platform.

According to information from VisaGuide, individuals in these categories must additionally furnish a letter of invitation from the OCOG. There is no fee associated with this category as well. Both groups are mandated to undergo the process of providing biometrics, including fingerprints and a photo, at the visa center.

Are spectators eligible to apply for the digital visa ?

For spectators desiring to witness the games, a standard Schengen Visa application will be necessary.
